Workout at Work with TrekDesk: Potential Defense Against Dementia?
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) February 14, 2012
Dementia & Alzheimer’s related deaths have surged in past years and sedentary lifestyles are under study as a major contributing factor. A new study, published in the February 2012 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise reveals that physical activity, such as that provided by walking with a TrekDesk treadmill desk, lowers the risk of dementia-related death.
The study, led by Dr. Riu Liu, divided 60,000 participants (male and female ages 20-88) into three groups based on their reported levels of physical activity. The study found that individuals in the high to mid range groups of physical activity had less than half the risk of death from dementia as those in the low range exercise group. The study further noted that although death rates from heart disease, breast cancer and stroke have declined in recent years, dementia and Alzheimer’s related deaths rose an alarming 46% between 2002 and 2006.
“These findings support physical-activity promotion campaigns by organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association and should encourage individuals to be physically active,” Dr. Liu stated in a journal news release. “Following the current physical-activity recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine will keep most individuals out of the low-fit category and may reduce their risk of dying with dementia.”
“We hope that Americans learn that taking 10,000 steps a day is essential to their long term physical and mental health. This study helps reinforce the importance of daily movement,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks.
Designed to fit any existing treadmill, TrekDesk treadmill desk is an affordable, full sized, height adjustable workstation that allows individuals the opportunity to gain the necessary amount of exercise daily to maintain health, prevent disease, strengthen muscles, boost mood and productivity, without requiring additional time during the day or extra motivation.
