Science Sheds New Light on How to Keep New Year?s Health Resolutions

Science Sheds New Light on How to Keep New Year’s Health Resolutions

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) December 14, 2011

Yes, it is that time of year again. Americans close out the year vowing that the upcoming fresh start on the calendar will rinse away the health sins and transgressions of the previous 364 days. It is an admirable moment, suspended in a cloud of holiday cheer and optimism. Unfortunately for most Americans, according to recent University of Illinois research, the optimism and commitment to exercise wanes quickly due to a cognitive disconnect called “self-efficacy”. TrekDesk treadmill desks offer a potential cure to the condition.

“Almost 50 percent of people who begin an exercise program drop out in the first six months,” stated Edward McAuley, a health professor and researcher at the University of Illinois. In their study, published recently in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, McAuley and colleagues performed a variety of cognitive tests on 177 men and women in their 60’s to early 70’s measuring levels of “self-regulatory” behavior. The cognitive tests were “measures such as spatial memory, being able to multitask and being able to inhibit undesirable responses,” he stated. Collectively, these tests assess what is known as “executive function.”

Two skills, the ability to multi-task and inhibiting undesirable responses, were important contributors to an individuals “self-efficacy”, a confidence needed to succeed. “We can potentially use this information to identify who might be poor adherers to an exercise program,” McAuley further related. “And then offer those people an array of different coping skills and strategies to inhibit or overcome bad behaviors.”

McCauley further pointed out that as executive function declines with age strategies to assist in the management of exercise obstacles would go a long way toward inducing previously sedentary individuals to maintain an exercise program.

This is where TrekDesk Treadmill Desks offer a distinct advantage. Walking while working does not take any additional time out of the day and allows an individual to stick to an exercise regimen while completing other normally desk bound, sedentary tasks.

“A very small percentage of Americans, at any age, perform enough daily exercise to promote health and prevent disease,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks. “The top two reasons Americans do not exercise enough, according to the National Institutes of Health, are lack of time and lack of motivation. TrekDesk removes these two obstacles from the equation.”

Designed to fit any existing treadmill, TrekDesk treadmill desk is an affordable, full sized, height adjustable workstation that allows individuals the opportunity to gain the necessary amount of exercise daily to maintain health, prevent disease, strengthen muscles, boost mood and productivity, without requiring additional time during the day or extra motivation. Workout at work with TrekDesk. No sweat!
